2016 Recipients

For the 1st time in 42 years the finish order matched the order in the program — in both shows — what are the odds* ? A unique occurrence to match this talented bunch!


Friday June 10, 2016
1st $2500 – Amber R. Schumann – Poway High School (Piano)
Amber plans to double major in Music, with an emphasis in Piano and Organ Performance and Statistics at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Her dream is to accompany the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and hopes to teach music one day. She also enjoys equestrian activities and photography.

2nd $1500 – Kailey J. Berry – Hilltop High School, Chula Vista (Vocal)
Kailey will attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas, majoring in Vocal Performance with a minor in Italian. She has been involved in the San Diego Junior Theatre, performing in over 20 musicals, and has recently expanded to Classical Voice. Her dream is to attend Boston University’s elite Opera Institute.

3rd $1000 – Kristine L. Llanderal – Poway High School (Piano)
Kristine intends to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Conducting at the University of Redlands. In addition to studying piano, she enjoys singing with chorale groups, playing the clarinet and has been the Drum Major for the past two years in Poway High’s “Emerald Brigade Marching Band”.

1st $2500 – Rachel E. Dovsky – San Dieguito Academy, Encinitas (Vocal)
Rachel has been performing in musical theatre for ten years, and plans to attend Chapman University to double major in Music-Vocal Performance and Cognitive Science. She will perform at the International Lyric Academy of Rome & Viterbo this summer, and dreams using music in therapy for people with special needs.

2nd $1500 – Nicholas J. Hoo – Westview High School, San Diego (Saxophone)
Nick intends to combine his passion for music with his interest in business by attending San Diego State University to major in Music Entrepreneurship and Business. In addition to the sax, he plays the piano and sings. In his spare time he volunteers at four local retirement homes, bringing the joy of music to others.

3rd $1000 – Rachel Hsieh – Del Norte High School, San Diego (Piano) 
Rachel will attend UCLA, possibly double-majoring in Piano Performance and International Relations. As a member of the San Diego Youth Symphony, she played the violin and her goal is to perform with a renowned orchestra. Ultimately she would like to teach music and inspire young students.
